Che cos'é il Cuckoo Day?
Il Cockoo Day viene tradizionalmente festeggiato il 15 di Aprile e dovrebbe segnare l'arrivo dei primi cuculi ("cuckoo" in inglese) nel Regno Unito, dopo la loro migrazione in Africa per l'inverno.
Un vecchio famoso adagio Inglese dice: “The cuckoo sings from St Tiburtius’s Day [April 14] to St John’s day [June 24]”. Conseguetemente il 14 aprile, tradizionalmente giornata dedicata a St. Tiburtius, è diventato il giorno del cuculo. Ovviamente anche se la festività è identificata con St. Tiburtius non è detto che i cuculi arrivino quel giorno ed in realtà è una festività che può essere spostata nel mese secondo la variabilità della natura stessa. Tra l'altro recentemente si è notato un arrivo aticipato di circa 5 giorni rispetto alla media.
La media del giorno di arrivo può avvenire per via della tradizione di scrivere una lettera al The Times quando si sente il primo cuculo cantare. Il The Times ha registrato tutti i primi cuculi in tutte le città del Regno Unito che hanno partecipato. Oltre al The Times anche altri enti ed istituzioni monitorano l'arrivo dei cuculi come per esempio Bird Spot. Sul loro sito è possible seguire gli arrivi dell'anno in corso e segnalare eventuali avvistamenti.

In ogni caso le segnalazioni sono molte e spesso anche precedenti Aprile, ma è assolutamente improbabile che i cuculi arrivino a Gennaio o Febbraio in quanto le temperature sono ancora troppo fredde per il loro volo.

Il cuculo che arriva nel Regno Unito è il cuculo comune, Cuculus canorus, che sverna in Africa per per poi tornare nel Regno Unito in Primavera.

Marsden Cuckoo Day in West Yorkshire is an annual traditional festival that celebrates the arrival of spring. Legend has it that the people of Marsden were aware that when the cuckoo arrived, so did the Spring and sunshine. They tried to keep Spring forever, by building a tower around the cuckoo. Unfortunately, as the last stones were about to be laid, the cuckoo flew away. As the legend says, it “were nobbut just wun course too low.”
Heathfield Cuckoo Fair in East Sussex is an annual tradition of releasing a cuckoo to mark the beginning of summer. A tale of Heathfield Fair depicts an Old Woman releasing the Cuckoo from her basket, whereupon he "flies up England carrying warmer days with him".
Downton Cuckoo Fair is an annual traditional event held on the greens of the picturesque village of Downton, south of Salisbury, Wiltshire. The fair marks the "opening the gate" to let the cuckoo through.
